Color Inspiration #32

Hi Everyone!

It's time for another Color Inspiration from Kristina Werner. When I first saw the colors for this week, I almost opted out of doing it this week mainly because I knew that the best thing to do would be a holiday card of some kind. However, I'm on a complete Christmas card overload since I'm trying to get my own finished to mail out. But what can I say? If stamping is an addiction, then Kristina's Color Inspiration must surely be an enabler!! So, this is what I came up with.
I started with a Riding Hood Red base and then added a neutral piece which I stamped with "Fine Lace" background stamp in Creamy Caramel. The original color palette calls for Sahara Sand; but I didn't have any of that. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had any of it! I embossed the angel image with gold embossing powder and then watercolored with Ruby Red and Caramel inks. I wheeled the "Soft Holly" image across a piece of Very Vanilla Card stock and then used poppin' pastels technique to color the entire piece in Old Olive chalk. I went over the image with Old Olive marker to add some definition and used my Ruby Red marker for the holly berries.

Being Inspired to revitalize the Mojo

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I apologize for the late post. I actually had this card done yesterday; but didn't have a chance to post it and this morning has been busy also. I decided to take another stab at the Mojo Monday sketch, this time using Beate's Inspiration piece to spur along the creativity a bit. I really liked the outdoor tuscanny look of this piece. I also really like the fact that it's all outside and therefore nature dictates the color palette. Colors in nature don't always go together; but the fact that nature doesn't care about that makes it all the more beautiful. To that end, I chose colors that I wouldn't have normally put together; but looked surprisingly good together. I started with a Handsome Hunter piece as my base and then added the Kiwi Kiss piece,which I stamped with the "Fine Lace" background (my go to background stamp!) in Old Olive ink. Then I added the two scalloped Tangerine Tango pieces at the top and the bottom. The sentiment at the bottom is from "Serene Spring" as well as the main image, which I colored using inks, watercolor pencils and aqua painters. The bird has a bit too much green in him; but by that point it was too late to start again! I attached the image to another piece of Handsome Hunter and then to a piece of Summer Sun. Finally I finished the card with the prima flowers on the side.
I really think that I like this one better....what do you think?

Mojo Monday...Mojo Tuesday, it's all good!

Good Morning Everyone!

Well apparently, Julee did post a Mojo sketch yesterday. I didn't see it until later in the afternoon, so I decided to wait until this morning to work on it. I've been stamping for my blog in the morning and then getting out the Christmas stuff in the afternoon and working on my Christmas cards. Anyhow, I've not really decided if I like this or not. It didn't really turn out the way that I had envisioned. I don't think the grape stamp from "Fruit Stand" really matches with the pattern paper that I chose. I kept thinking that I would like it once it all came together; but I just don't feel like it really did. Oh, well, too late to turn back now, as they say. I'd be interested in seeing what you all think, so feel free to comment...good or bad!
Lots to do today, so I'm going to let you all decipher the particulars of the card. It's pretty straightforward anyhow. Have a good day and be sure to check back later for Beate's Inspiration piece.

Recycling the Mojo

Good Afternoon Everyone!

Sorry the post is a bit late, I was waiting this morning to see if Julee would post a Mojo Monday sketch; but she doesn't seem to have. Perhaps she is on vacation. Anyhow I decided to look through some of her past sketches and see if there was one that I had not done that I could use. I found this one and I thought it would work well for the stamp set that I wanted to use which is "Puns from the Past." This is a relatively new set and I really like it. The only problem with it is that the images are small and skinny, so sometimes it's hard to design a whole card around them. I also wanted to try a different color combination, which I think came together quite well also. I started with a Chocolate Chip base and added a layer of Groovy Guava, which I stamped with "Print Pattern" Background stamp. Then I put the Certainly Celery piece on top of that. That piece was stamped with the swirls from the retired set "Basic Backgrounds." Next came the Saffron piece and the two pieces of ribbon. I layered the image piece on another piece of Celery and then Chocolate and then finally Groovy Guava, which I paper pierced at the top and bottom. As I said, before, the images are small in that set, so I think that they need a lot of layering behind them. I made some photo corners from Saffron Paper (note to self: get photo corner punch!) and attached them with two antique copper brads in each one. Finally, I added the "Thinking of You" Sentiment and completed the card.

Beate's Weekend Sketch #67

Good Saturday Morning Everyone!

I hope you all had a fabulous Friday. Mine was spectacular! My oh so sweet husband surprised me with a trip to Savannah and lunch at Paula Deen's restaurant "The Lady and Sons." It was so yummy! We both just had the buffet; but it was good ol' Southern cookin'. We also went shopping for a new diamond anniversary ring for me! I picked out the most gorgeous diamond wrap for my solitaire. We still have to get it sized, so I don't have it just yet. I will have to take a picture of it and show you.
We came home and then my mom offered to buy us dinner for our anniversary, so we all went to Applebee's. So I got out of cooking twice in one day!
I didn't have a chance to do any stamping yesterday, obviously! But I did get a chance to do Beate's weekend sketch this morning. I used Really Rust as my base. Then I took a piece of watercolored paper and used my stipple brush to stipple Sage Shadow, Really Rust, and Navy ink and then I took my aqua painters and dragged them across the paper, blending the colors. Then I took a stamp from "Itty Bitty Backgrounds" and stamped it in Sage Shadow ink across the watercolored background. I used that same background stamp on a piece of Sage Shadow card stock. The NQ Navy pattern paper is from the Hostess Packet of Print Patterns Paper. I used the Tulip stamp from the "Flower for All Seasons" set which I colored with watercolor pencils, inks and aqua painters. I punched out two scalloped circles and used them as backing for that image. I put a brad in each of the buttons and then added those to complete the card.

Combining Challenges Once Again,

Good Morning Everyone!

Yes, once again I have combined challenges. It's so much easier than trying to do a separate card for everything. Today's card is a combination of the SCS sketch challenge and this week's Color Inspiration from Kristina Werner. I usually try to do both of these on Wednesday; but I didn't get to it until this morning. I am giving this card to my husband tomorrow for our 10th wedding anniversary. I really liked these colors that Kristina chose this week because I thought they were easy to use to create a masculine card but I also felt like I was still able to add a bit of a feminine touch to it as well. I started with a Pumpkin Pie base and added a piece of Close to Cocoa, then I cut a piece of Saffron 4 1/2 by 4 1/2 and added two purple strips to each side. I didn't actually have Elegant Eggplant, so I substituted the closest thing that I have. I cut (4) 1" squares in the same purple and added the prima flowers with the gold eyelets attaching it all to the Saffron piece. I used the flower stamp from the "Fresh Cuts" Set around three of the sides in Saffron ink and then stamped the Sentiment at the bottom in Pumpkin Pie. I stamped the center image, which is from an old Sale-a-bration set in Lavender Lace on glossy white and attached it to a small square of Close to Cocoa. I attached to entire Saffron piece with pop up squares the card base.
So, that's all for me today. I think my husband has surprise anniversary activities planned for me tomorrow. I've no idea what or where they may lead me, but I'm super excited to find out. Recipe Thursday: Buffalo Chicken Chili Mac

Good Morning All!

For my birthday on Tuesday I got Rachael Ray's new "Big Orange Cookbook" I've not had a chance to cook anything from it yet; but I found this recipe and I've seen her make it on TV as well and it looked scrumptious!! It is most likely going to be what I cook in the next day or so. Try it and let me know what you think.

Ingredients:

EVOO
2 lbs boneless chicken breasts, cut into small bits.
1 large carrot peeled and finely chopped
1 onion chopped
3 Celery stalks, finely chopped
5 large garlic cloves garlic chopped or grated
1 Tbsp paprika
1 bay leaf
2 cups chicken stock
1/4-1/2 hot sauce
15oz crushed tomatoes
1lb elbow macaroni
1/2 cup shredded pepper jack cheese
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese.
2 scallions, end trimmed, thinly sliced.

Directions:

Preheat broiler and bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat
Put another large pot over medium high heat and heat 2 tablespoons of EVOO.
Add the chicken and brown for about 6 minutes.
Add all the vegetables, including the garlic and the bay leaf along with the paprika and season with salt and pepper.
Cook the veggies, stirring often for about 4 minutes until tender.
Add the chicken stock and scrap up all the brown bits from the bottom of the pot. Add the hot sauce and then the crushed tomatoes.
Bring the chili up to a boil and then lower heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
While the chili is simmering, cook the macaroni pasta until al dente.
Drain the pasta and then toss it into the chili and mix. (Discard the Bay leaf)
Transfer the chili mixture to a 13x9 casserole dish.
Sprinkle both kinds of cheeses evenly over the top and then place under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts
Sprinkle the sliced scallions on top for garnish.

Trying Something New

Good Afternoon!

I hope you are all having a fabulous day! My birthday was quite wonderful, except for the fact that I pulled a muscle in my neck and could barely move! Still, my mom made my favorite dinner for me, Shepherd's Pie and I had a nice cake and then I got a new cookbook and an Ipod Shuffle., which I've already downloaded songs to!
This morning I decided to make a card for my sister, whose dog passed away suddenly from a heart attack yesterday morning. For those of you who have animals, and have lost them you know how hard that can be. I thought it would be nice to try a Zindorff braying technique tutorial. this was the first time I'd had the courage to try it. It was actually pretty simple because the directions were so detailed and step by step. I think for my first time, it didn't turn out too badly. I adjusted a few things about the picture, but for the most part followed it step by step. Hey, why re-invent the wheel right? If you've not tried one of her tutorials, I encourage you to give it a try. They're not nearly as intimidating as they first appear.

Mojo Monday with a "Pretty" Girl!

Good Monday Morning Everyone!

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend. Mine was great! My husband and I attended the USMC Birthday Ball Saturday evening, which was spectacular as always. Yesterday I went with a group of friends to see "The Secret Life of Bees". It was soooo gooood!!! If you haven't seen it, make a point to; but definitely don't go without any tissues. You many even need a whole box because it's a definite tear jerker, and I'm not talking the "get choked up, cry a few tears" kind of crying. I'm talking "blubbering, bawling, sniffing" crying!
Before I left to go to the movie, however I checked the mail and lo and behold my new Paper Pretties Stamp of the Month had arrived. Yea!! I took one look at her and knew I couldn't wait to get use her today. I knew that I wanted to use the traditional red and green Christmas Colors; but I also wanted to incorporate a couple of softer colors as well, so I ended up with Ballet Blue, Garden Green, Pink Pirouette, and Riding Hood Red. This is also my card for this week's Mojo Monday sketch. I had to adjust the sketch just a bit in order to fit Sophia on there; but I think it works nonetheless. I used a retired Christmas Tree wheel in Garden Green for the top of the card. For the textured background behind Sophia I used Pink Pirouette, Garden Green sponged on white card stock and then sprayed with water and then used Ruby Red and Ballet Blue over it.I stamped Sophia in Close to Cocoa and then filled in her in with aqua painters and inks. I paper-pieced her skirt from a piece of Christmas DSP that I had.

It's the Weekend!!

TGIF Everyone!

Wow, what a crazy morning! Dropped everyone off at school and daycare and then went to the grocery store, came home, put everything away, then off to pick every one up and then lunch and finally nap time! (AKA stamping time!) I really liked this week's sketch from Beate. I think the thing I liked best about it is that it doesn't have any circles! It seems as though a lot of people are on a circle kick lately, which is great when one has cutter blades that work properly! Anyways, I immediately thought of my "Pocket Silhouettes" set, because I had seen a lot of people use it when I was looking at what people had submitted for KWerner's Color Inspiration. I chose Bravo Burgundy, Not Quite Navy, Sage Shadow and Blush Blossom for my colors. I stamped the images along the bottom in Sage Shadow, and Burgundy. Then I used the floral background in Sage ink. I stamped another image from the "Pocket Silhouettes" in Blush Blossom (which is a bit hard to see in the picture), then used my Burgundy and NQ Navy markers to stamp the image again and stamped it on top. I inked the edges in Sage Shadow ink and attached to NQ Navy piece, which I then paper-pierced. I had originally planned to use Burgundy ribbon; but realized I was out of it, so I used Chocolate Chip instead. Finally I finished the card with the sentiment from "Sincere Salutations" and the eyelets and brads. The picture looks a bit crooked, and I'm not sure why!

A "not so simple" Fishy Card

Hi Everyone!

I decided that since I didn't get a chance to do yesterday's SCS sketch challenge that I would do it today. Usually I work on whatever I'm going to post in the morning while Tyler's at Pre-K and then post it while they are eating lunch. This card, however, took a bit longer. I really wanted to use this "Sushi" set from Stampendous that I've not used in a long time. I started out with a piece of Ballet Blue as my base and cut out the Rose Red squares and attached them along the bottom. Then I cut another piece of Rose Red and paper pierced along the sides and tops and stitched in a guava and blue thread around it. For the record, that is the step that took the longest; but that was my vision and that was where I was going! Then I took a piece of glossy white and placed a circle scrap in the middle, then I sponged Rose Red around the edges and then Ballet Blue. I removed the circle and then sponged in Bashful Blue inside the circle. I used a retired wheel for the strip at the bottom and then brayered Groovy Guava ink over it. I stamped the various images for the main scene in Ballet Blue. The castle and the fish were stamped separately, colored and then cut out and attached.
So, there you have it. This card was a bit out of my comfort zone; but I think the results were decent enough. Thanks so much for visiting with me and have a great day!Oh, and be sure to scroll down for this week's recipe.

Recipe Thursday: "Whatever Vegetable Soup"

Good Morning Everyone!

I wasn't sure what to call this week's recipe, so I just decided to call it exactly what it is: "Whatever Vegetable Soup" because you use whatever vegetables you have in your refrigerator along with the meats in the recipe and it makes this big ol pot of steamy comfort, perfect for a chilly evening.

Ingredients (feel free to substitute "whatever" wherever you want!)

1 small or 1/2 large onion chopped
1 - 2 cups chicken cut up (I had an extra breast leftover in the fridge and used that)
5 slices bacon
1 or 2 carrots chopped.
2 stalks celery chopped
1/2 bell pepper (red, yellow, green...whatever)chopped
2 potatoes, peeled and cut into bite size pieces
1 box frozen spinach, thawed and drained.
1 can Cannellini beans or other small white beans (undrained)
1/4 cup wine (white or red)
1 can diced tomatoes or 1/2-3/4 cup crushed tomatoes
3-4 cups Chicken Stock.
1 Bay leaf
Fresh Parsley
Paprika, Cumin, salt and pepper
Handful of Feta Cheese

Directions:

In deep pot, cook the bacon until it has rendered some fat. Add the chicken and season with S/P, along with some Paprika and Cumin. Cook the chicken for 5-7 minutes, then add all the vegetables and the bay leaf. (Note: It is best to add the potatoes and carrots first and let them cook for 3-5 minutes before adding the other vegetables, because they will take the longest to cook) Cook the vegetables until tender about 8 minutes,and then deglaze the bottom of the pot with the wine, making sure to scrap up all the good brown bits on the bottom. Add the beans, the tomatoes and the Chicken Stock and cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes, then add the Spinach and more seasonings if necessary. Make sure the potatoes are nice and tender before serving and take out the bay leaf. Just before serving, add the parsley and the Feta cheese and let it melt in the soup for a few minutes.

This soup is great leftover as well, so go ahead and make a big pot and enjoy!

Color Inspiration #30.

Good Morning Everyone!

Wow! I can't believe that there have been 30 K. Werner Color Inspirations. It's amazing that she just keeps coming up with such great color combos. This week's is not exception. I love the soft and subtle neutralness of this particular combo of Old Olive, Certainly Celery, Sahara Sand and White. I don't have any Sahara Sand, so I try to find an acceptable substitute, which I found in my scrap pile. I thought the inspiration piece was very clean and very simple and I wanted to keep that theme throughout my card. As soon as I saw the flowers in the Duvet in the picture, I knew which stamp set I was going to use. I wish I could remember the name of it; but I don't! Sorry! It's from an old SU Sale-A Bration set. I used Celery as my base and two step stamped the flower stamp across the top and the bottom in Celery ink. I cut two half circles out of the Old Olive piece and wrapped a piece of 5/8 wide grosgrain Old Olive ribbon around it. I stamped the flowers behind the sentiment in Almost Amethyst ink, which is a bit hard to see in the picture. I used Close to Cocoa and Olive for the sentiment in the middle. Three simple brads on the right side complete the card.
I know that the posts have been rather short lately, and I think that's because I've only been doing one card instead of two each day to share with you. I've been working hard on Christmas cards, however. For those of you who make your cards, you know how time consuming that can be. Don't worry, I'll always have at least one card to share! Grateful for You, SCS Color Challenge

Good Morning Everyone!

It's Veterans Day and that means no school of course, which gave me time this morning to complete the SCS color challenge, all before getting dressed! This week's colors are Pacific Point, Certainly Celery and Grey. I CASED the design from a card I found in the SCS gallery. I used the Pacific Point as my base and paper pierced around the edges, then I attached a piece of celery paper that I had stamped with the retired "Crosshatch" background stamp. I put a piece of Pacific Point striped ribbon down the center. The "Grateful for You" image on the right is from the "Puns from the Past" set. I finished the card with the prima flowers on the left and the white ribbon at the top. This is another card that I will be donating to the SCS Cards for a Cause this month.

Mojo Monday and a Special Video

Good Morning Everyone!

It's Monday, and that means it's time for another Mojo Monday sketch. I was able to put this together this morning, so I wanted to get it posted, because I have lots of other things to work on today. I chose Sage Shadow, Regal Rose, Pale Plum and Rose Red for my colors. The scallops behind the top circle are 1" circles punched out in Regal Rose and Rose Red paper and then glued behind the Pale Plum circle. I thought the circle was a bit empty so I put the ribbon there to kind of spunk it up a bit. I used the retired wheel "Daisies" for the Regal Rose piece behind the center image. The center images are from "Simply Said" and are stamped in Red Rose, Sage Shadow, and Regal Rose.

Beate's Weekend Sketch and Some GH Chatter

Hello Everyone!

TGIF means it's time for another weekend sketch from Beate. This week she incorporated circles, which was a bit hard for me since my circle cutter blade is in desperate need of being replaced! I decided to use Blue Bayou with Baja Breeze and So Saffron. I also wanted to use some of the Prints Pattern Paper that I had; and for that I chose the Red to do the circle in the corner. I punched out 1" circles in So Saffron and made a scalloped border underneath the red circle. The little bird image is from Imaginisce and is actually the first time I've put ink on it! I stamped the card base with the "Print Pattern Background Stamp" in Buckaroo Blue ink, which is the closest to the Blue Bayou that I had. The sentiment, which I colored with my markers, is from the retired hostess set "Time Well Spent". I used a different red pattern paper to put as a border around the sentiment and then attached that to a piece of Baja Breeze paper. Finally, I did a bit of paper piercing around it and the card was done.
Oh, by the way, there's nothing wrong with your eyes...it's a bit crooked! Oh well, can't be perfect all the time!
It occurred to me today that it's been quite a while since we've chatted about GH. So, here's a couple of quick thoughts about that. First, I am ecstatic that Laura is back and I hope she sticks around for a good while this time. Glad to see that little Emma Drake has finally arrived also; but I can't wait to see how Patrick really steps up to his role as Daddy. Still waiting on the Liason thing to come through...my youngest will be in college by the time that happens; but I'm still hopeful!! Finally, I think that Sonny and Karpov are working together; and that they are setting up the Zacharra's. I'm not sure; but that's my two cents. Two Cards, Three Challenges

Good Morning Everyone!
I apologize for not posting yesterday; the day just got away from me. I did have the chance to complete two challenges. The first one is from Beate's Be Inspired Challenge from Tuesday. Obviously, the first thing that came to mind for me in this piece were the circles, which I incorporated at the bottom of my design. I used So Saffron, Old Olive, Not Quite Navy and Turquoise for my colors. The theme of this card was round , so I rounded the corners of the card and some of the accent pieces as well. The main image in the middle is from the "Cheers to You" set, which I stamped in Mustard ink and then filled in with aquapainters. I cut them out and attached it to an Old Olive Scallop Circle layered on another Saffron Scallop Circle. I used today's SCS sketch challenge for the layout of the card as well.
The second card is for this week's color inspiration from KWerner. This week's colors were Pacific Point, Taken with Teal, Pumpkin Pie, Elegant Eggplant, and White. I also used the same SCS sketch; but flipped it to get a bit of a different look. I chose "Fresh Cuts" for my stamp set and simply cut it into equal pieces to put across the middle. I added eyelets and ribbon as accessories to finish the card.
Both of these cards will be going in my pile for the SCS Cards for A Cause.

Recipe Thursday: Chicken and Pepper Cheese Sauce Pasta

Hi Everyone!
Here is your recipe for this week. I hope you enjoy it.

Ingredients:

8oz Spaghetti-cooked/drained
1 tbsp flour
salt/pepper
1/2tsp red pepper
8 oz chicken breasts cut into 1" pieces
1 tbsp oil
1 cup green pepper-chopped
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 tbsp jalepeno pepper
2 cloves garlic pressed
2 tbsp flour
3/4 cup chicken broth
1/2 cup milk
1 Tsp Worcestershire Sauce
1 Cup shredded monterey or White Cheddar Cheese
1/4 cup Sour Cream

Directions:
In a small bowl, combine 1 tbsp flour, the salt and pepper and red pepper. Toss Chicken in flour mixture and set aside.
Heat oil in skillet, add green pepper, onion, jalepeno and garlic until tender. Remove and set aside.
Add chicken to skillet and cook 5-6 minutes and then remove.
Stir 2 tbsp flour into drippings, slowly add worcestershire sauce, chicken broth and milk.
Cook and stir until thick and bubbly.
Add the cheese and stir until it melts. Stir 1 cup of hot mixture into sour cream and then return all of the mixture to the skillet.
Stir in chicken and vegetables. Cook until heated; but don't boil. Serve over cooked pasta.

SCS Challenges

Good Morning Everyone!
I hope everyone is having a good morning. I am sure many of you will be voting today, so I just want to say good luck to you and your candidate, whomever he may be. I decided to do a couple of Splitcoast Challenges today since I've not done any of them in a while. Today's challenge is the color challenge; and this week's colors are Tangerine Tango, Kiwi Kiss and Pixie Pink. I also decided to combine it with last week's sketch challenge. I used three different types of ribbon in the middle.The stamp set is "Priceless". The rest of the card is as simple as it looks, so I don't there's a need for a lot of explanation. Mojo Monday

Hi Everyone!

Here is my card for this week's Mojo Monday Challenge. I am going to try to get back on track this week with my normal challenges. I used Baja Breeze, Ruby Red and Mustard for my colors. The Angel is from Paper Pretties and is my November Stamp of the Month. This is the first time I've used her. I thought she would be appropriate because this is also the first card that I am doing for Splitcoast Stamper's November Cards for a Cause. This month, I will be doing cards to donate to "Operation: Quiet Comfort". Be sure to click on the link to read more about how you can participate in this worthwhile challenge.
I stamped by Baja Breeze piece with my "Floral Background Stamp". I used the swirl from the "Priceless" set on the corners of the Ruby Red piece. For the Angel, I stamped it in Mostly Mustard on White paper. Then I went over the wings with a Versamarker and then sponge daubed chalk over it to color them in. I used my stipple brushes in Baja ink to color in the front of her Angel Gown and then trimmed it in Mustard ink. I finished the card with the sentiment and the three Prima flowers.

A New Month, A New Look

Good Morning Everyone!
Happy November! This is my favorite month of the year. It's my birthday month and anniversary month, which makes it fantastic! I can hardly believe that DH and I will be celebrating 10 years together in just a few weeks. So, as I said last week was crazy; but it was a lot of fun. The kids all had a great time dressing up in their costumes and trick or treating. Jonathan's birthday is Oct 30, so between the birthday cake and the trick or treat candy, there is definitely no shortage of sugar in my house right now! As you can see, I've changed the layout for the month of November, I hope you like it!
I spent a lot of last week working on my Christmas cards, which I will be revealing a little later this month. I did also have a chance to do Beate's weekend sketch yesterday. I liked the layout, which I thought was simple and it didn't take long to do. I chose Pacific Point, Tempting TQ, and Kiwi Kiss for my main colors. The neutral color was just from my scrap package. I used my corner rounder to make the scallop edges on the Turquoise piece. I paper pierced all around the edges of the Pacific Point piece and then faux stitched with my Tempting TQ marker. I stamped the Kiwi piece with my "Crosshatch Background Stamp" in Old Olive ink. The sewing machine is from the "Puns from the Past" stamp. I stamped it in Close to Cocoa ink and then went over it with my aqua painters.
